When Bob and Kit Champlin dug out a used beaten up ten gallon tank from Kit’s parent’s attic, they could in no way predict what it would start. Two years later and one tank turned into twelve, then twelve into a staggering 50 plus as Bob began his own fish breeding business, selling to pet stores. Then in 1975 Bob, Kit and a partner bought a little pet store named Critter Hut. Fast forward to the 1980′s, Bob and Kit are buying out their partner and begin their 100% ownership of Critter Hut. Located first in a little red house on Main Street in Wakefield, Bob and Kit began building a reputation for great customer service, healthy animals, and just a great place to shop for your pets’ needs.

Fast forward another few years (and 3 children later), Critter Hut had moved to the center of Wakefield, into the Heritage Mall. Growing up, all three sons- Chris, Will, and Jeff – worked at the store. All would leave for other jobs, but the pull of the family business would prove to be too strong and all would eventually return. In 2002 Critter Hut faced a problem with location as the building that they were then in was being fought over by Brooks Pharmacy and CVS. CVS won and required the whole building, so Bob and Kit moved the store to 91 Point Judith Road, Salt Pond Plaza, in Narragansett. It is there the store still remains, with a store full of healthy animals, great products, and a knowledgeable staff ready to deal with any problem or question customers may have. Two of Bob and Kit’s sons now work at the Narragansett location, and they represent the next generation of Critter Hut.

Critter Hut in North Kingstown began in 2004 through the combined efforts of Bob and Kit, their son Jeff, and business partner Adam Heroux. A longtime employee who always wanted to open his own pet store, Adam joined with the Champlins in opening another Critter Hut in North Kingstown. After five successful years in Hunt River Commons, the extended family (the Champlins and Adam) made the joint decision to move to a better location. Now located in Kingstown Plaza (TJ Maxx, Home Goods) it has flourished and has been enriching the lives of many pets in the area.

As of now Critter Hut has been family owned and operated for over 35 years and offers cat & dog supplies, tropical freshwater and saltwater fish, exotic birds and reptiles, and small animals. Our specialty is customer service; and whether Fido the dog needs a new bone, or Splishy the fish needs a new bowl, our knowledgeable staff is ready to help. Stop in and meet the family!
